Glacial Stitches

Svalbard Glacier recreated in cross stitch

These are some images of my latest work in progress which has followed on from my Arctic artist residency last October.

I started the work off by embroidering a glacier in blue thread (above). Having finished embroidering the image of glacier I set about ‘calving’ it up into small pieces as you can see in the images below. These pieces very in size from around about the size of a penny piece up to some which are approximately the size of a fifty pence piece.

The work is inspired by issues relating to the receding of glaciers in the high arctic as well as my own experience of glacier calving. Calving, in this instance, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier – rather than being the result of climate change calving is normally caused by the glacier expanding.
